I recommend playing a no merchant class first... Go through the tutorials and do the beginning quests. There is a lot of information in them, only takes about 10 min for the tutorial.
there are some people playing but not a lot eight now.

I'm never far :) and i believe Skydie is still active. Its hard to really see how many people come and go =\
