what stats should i use to start as a ranger?

Well, the best bet would be the stats Rangers are the best at, ones with the highest cap! Stamina for atk speed, str for dmg. I'd max those first, and maybe enough faith/knowledge to cast basic druidery.

I think sticking with the defaults for your first time playing is best :-)
