It is intentional that you do not gain experience from that spell.

well how you want mage to lvl hit with his staff until lvl 40 or buy reg all the time ? and cast the same spell over and over?

there are other spells beside ring of fire... blast, fire shock, chill etc just for mundane magic. you can also take up druidry, white magic or black magic for many more
|

Why not go good until you are ready to go evil, whtie magic has a lot more spells as well. Its an indirect source of damage, and would make leveling extremely easy.
